The Calvert-Sharpe Family Resource Center offers many programs to promote parent and family involvement, to include: Donuts with Grown-Ups, Fancy Nancy Tea Party, Experience for Fathers & Sons, Parent Café, Dinner Tale Project, and Parenting Session. They are a resource assisting in health services and providing food, clothing, and utility services when needed. They assist families faced with traumatic experiences. They provide 97 snack packs to families every Friday. While I was visiting with her, she shared with me a grant she received to provide new, name brand shoes to students in need. She works with teachers that provide suggestions. She worked with Shoe Carnival, sized those in need, and went shopping. All of this must be done outside of her normal workday. She must find funding for all these activities and materials for these projects through fundraisers or private donations from the community. She feels very fortunate to have such a supportive community and explained the grants received only provide staffing for the social workers, and all the additional resources provided are received through collaborative work from the staff and community. When asked what the community could do to support the Family Resource Center, she provided a prepared list to include snack pack item donations, elastic waist pants or shorts, hygiene items, school supplies, sponsor a child at Christmas, become a mentor, and of course, monetary donations are always needed. If you have more time than money, there are many opportunities for mentoring. She is starting a mentoring program where you can be matched with a child and meet before school, reading together and spending time to provide support and encouragement. If you would like to donate or provide any support, it would be greatly appreciated.
