INTHEVUE.COM | JULY 2025 43 { b y M a r i s s a O l i v e r } FASCIA HAS BECOME A HOT TOPIC IN THE WORLD OF MOVEMENT, wellness, and somatics - and for good reason. Whether you’ve taken a yoga class, had a massage, or worked with a physical therapist, chances are fascia has come up. Yet, for something so fundamental, it’s still widely misunderstood. Fascia is a vast, uninterrupted network that weaves throughout your entire body, surrounding and supporting every muscle, organ, nerve, and bone. Made up of a slippery gel-like matrix, water and stretchy (yet durable) fibers, this connective tissue offers both flexibility and strength. Imagine it as a see-through bodysuit just beneath your skin, yet it also threads deep inside you, wrapping even the innermost layers like bone coverings. Depending on its role, fascia shifts in texture. It may be thin and web-like, cushiony with fat, or dense and tough where extra support is needed, such as your lower back. It adapts to the demands placed on it, showing the strength of a steel cable in your ligaments, the clarity of your corneas, or the ruggedness of the thickened skin on a barefoot traveler. In its healthiest form, fascia is smooth and elastic, allowing tissues to move easily past one another. It also operates on a microscopic scale. Each of your trillions of cells is cradled in its own layer of this sensitive, responsive tissue. Although, it’s not just about structure. Fascia is deeply involved in how we move, how we feel, and even how we process emotions. As research grows, it’s clear that fascia is a vital piece of the mind-body puzzle.
