For those unfamiliar with oral pathology, and the reasoning as to why early diagnosis is so important, Harris enlightens. “Generally speaking, pathology involves understanding the causes and effects of different diseases. With regards to oral pathology or other pathology in the head & neck, a number of these conditions may in fact represent abnormal tissues that are not cancerous or precancerous, though some may in fact be rather aggressive,” said Harris. “There are also a number of conditions regarding abnormal tissues that do have an appearance of being consistent with a pre- cancer or a cancer.” With diagnosis so important, technology has advanced throughout the years. One of those has been 3D imaging, which has been able to help the way Harris diagnoses and treats patients. “The advent of 3-dimensional imaging becoming a mainstay has remarkably added to the accuracy of the ability to diagnose and treat and even perform operations virtually prior to performing them on the patient, which aids in providing a number of benefits,” said Harris. “Even with 3-dimensional imaging becoming more prevalent and easily accessible, there are still times when the actual conditions, and the patient, are different than what the imaging can reveal. So, like anything else, there are limitations, and it should be utilized as a very reliable tool but only as an adjunct to an examination and discussion with the patient.” In major or minor surgeries, one thing that can help ease one’s worries and enhance the patient’s experience is often in-office anesthesia.
