They first sent him to Barnes Hospital, but doctors there referred him to St. Louis University Hospital. Doctors there told him the same thing he had heard in Paducah; they could use medicine to shrink the heart. Then, they admitted him and told him he needed a heart transplant. “And I thought, how long have I got?” Grief said. “If I go home, and they said maybe two months.” Reluctant at first, his parents lined up several of his girlfriends to talk him into having the surgery. Doctors told him not to go too far, so he and his parents arranged to visit a cousin in Troy, Illinois, to wait. But as doctors showed him how to work the pager, a heart from a 26-year-old gunshot victim in Chicago became available. He had been on the heart transplant list only for a few hours. “The doctor said, ‘Do you hear the helicopter?’ and I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘That’s the team that’s going to retrieve the heart out of the person that’s been shot,’ and he said, ‘Everything’s going to start moving real fast.’” It did.
