Creativity and skills in the studio are developed through practice and persistence, so the Pre- College Program is the perfect place to start and to recognize that college is a meaningful and enjoyable experience, rather than that is overwhelming or unattainable. “The classes offered do change some from year to year. We try to mix it up a bit with disciplines that appeal to different interests,” said Aho. In some measure, students tend to divide into those that prefer 2D media, like painting and drawing, and those that prefer ceramics, metalsmithing, or other 3D practices. “As someone who prefers 2D, if pressed for a favorite, I would say painting, as it is a difficult media and our painting instructor, Tanya Neitzke, does a great job with younger artists as well as traditional college students and older students alike,” said Aho. This year’s program blends a variety of 3D practices into both weeks and Evin Dubois, PSAD’s sculpture professor, is equally adept in connecting to high schoolers. There are many favorite moments that Aho has with the summer program, but one sticks out the most. “Over the past 12 years, the best part is always the Family and Friends Open House at the end of the second week. Students are able to share their work, which always includes finished art, with those closest to them and enjoy the recognition and rewards of a job well done,” said Aho.
