INTHEVUE.COM | MAY 2023 87 After all the calls over the past year, the nonprofit itself has evolved. Jennifer and Judy are seeing more clearly what the structure is and what the community really needs. The things that get overlooked, however, are constantly affecting those around us. The money that is raised for Embracing the Aged is used for two things, Jennifer explains for VUE. “Conducting community outreach programs within the community to better prepare and educate our community for the season of aging,” said Jennifer. “Secondly, we are supporting the most vulnerable older adults when they do not have options. We try to bridge a gap when seniors are faced with needing support but are unable to find options,” said Jennifer. “For instance, a widow lady with no extra money or no family support and is living in an unsafe environment, electrical hazards, and plumbing issues. We want to call a plumber and Embracing the Aged pay for it.” On October 13, 2022 - Jennifer started the nonprofit by putting in $200. “That is when we started the Trail of Trees on Broadway fundraiser. We started getting sponsors for the event and with the money, we built the trees that were auctioned off,” said Jennifer. “The nonprofit has recently built up to $2,000 in the accounts - some from fundraising and a few kind donations. Reports for the nonprofit account will be published soon and will be available to everyone.” Currently, they have helped assist approximately 850 - individuals. Whether they are seniors, caretakers, or loved ones since January of 2022, Embracing the Aged has lent a hand. “One of the stories that stays with me, is the simplest need that we were able to fix, and how big it was to the person we helped,” said Jennifer. “There was a lady that lived alone at her home. She had no family or support and all she needed was a walker because her balance was deteriorating. Judy called a place that has donated walkers, picked it up, and delivered it to her home.” This story in particular touched Jennifer and Judy because as individuals that are independent, we do not realize the obstacles for so many in the community. These obstacles can be fixed so easily with the right support. “The most rewarding part is when we change someone’s circumstances for the better or be the support for a loved one or caretaker. No matter how big or small it might seem, it is always a blessing to us,” said Jennifer. “There is no way I would have made it with this huge vision without Judy by my side. Her faith and her eagerness to help people is truly uplifting and has remained the most important part of this since the beginning. I am a dreamer and I always go big, so Judy grounds me. We have 50 years between the both of us dedicated to helping seniors and helped us realize how important it is that we have these seniors in our lives.” Jennifer leaves us with a quote - one that helps fuel the project and shows the true heart of her and Judy both. “Appearances of youth and beauty, or money and objects, will not drag you out of the hardest seasons we face as humans,” said Jennifer. “But the faith, love, and the wisdom from an elderly friend will.” To assist Embracing the Aged, or if you need help yourself, Jennifer and Judy are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 270-556-7039 or [email protected].
