business in the 13 counties of the River Region can become a Lake Chem member. Lake Chem’s impact can also be seen in the lives of its members. Two stories from its 55 years of service stand out as reminders of what local financial relationships can mean. In one instance, a man working on a crew, building a home for a Lake Chem employee, needed a truck but had a low credit score. After speaking with the employee, he decided to give Lake Chem a chance. The credit union provided him with a loan, allowing him to build his credit. Eventually, he was able to purchase his first home. In another case, a longtime member experienced health issues that resulted in her losing her teeth. She turned to a Lake Chem lender with whom she had built a relationship over the years. The lender found a way to provide the funds needed for her dental work. “To this day the lady talks about how our employee not only saved her life but gave her a reason to smile again,” Jessica said. Lake Chem also places an emphasis on financial literacy, helping people understand budgeting, credit, loans, and preparing for emergencies. The credit union works to challenge the idea that homeownership requires perfect credit and a 20% down payment. That approach extends to the way members interact with Lake Chem. Whether through mobile banking, mobile deposit, Zelle, a phone call, or a branch visit, the goal is to meet members where they are. Lake Chem also supports schools, nonprofits, businesses through donations, sponsorships, and hands-on volunteer work. Employees contribute hundreds of volunteer hours each year outside of their work, serving members. Because Lake Chem is member-owned, those members also have a voice in the credit union’s future. Opening a savings account establishes a share in the credit union and makes the individual a member-owner. Members can attend the annual meeting and vote for the Board of Directors. Looking ahead, Lake Chem’s goal remains much the same as it has been since 1971: serve its members, and strengthen the communities around them. “Member service is at the heart of what we do,” Jessica said. “As we continue to grow and expand, building and maintaining our relationships with the people of Western Kentucky will always be our priority.” SUPPORT BUSINESSES THAT MAKE OUR MISSION POSSIBLE SUPPORT BUSINESSES THAT MAKE OUR MISSION POSSIBLE INTHEVUE.COM | SEPTEMBER 2026 29 PENNEY CULP 270-252-4969
