The hours can be long with games, prep time, and travel time. That has meant time spent away from his family. His wife, Kay, said the family is proud of Brewer and his dedication to officiating three sports in two states. “Preston is very well-liked and respected,” she said. “The phone may ring at 10 o’clock when football starts or during baseball or basketball season and someone is calling to say, ‘Preston, what’s the rule for such-and-such’ or ‘Did I make the right call?’ And he graciously tells them that ‘Yes, you did,’ or ‘Well, I believe that you can go to the rule book,’ which he can almost recite.” Knowing the rules so well has earned Brewer respect. Brewer hasn’t let criticism from the stands or from the sidelines bother him through the years. He looks at the criticizing fans and simply smiles or says thank you. “I’ll never forget one coach who one time called me and said, ‘Mr. Brewer, that was a Mickey Mouse call,’ and I turned to him and said, ‘Thank you, coach, Mickey Mouse is one of the most beloved characters all over the world and I appreciate that.’ He didn’t say any more.” While some of his friends on officiating crews have had to stop because of physical ailments, Brewer has kept going. He plays golf regularly and takes martial arts lessons once a week. “People have said, ‘Preston, you’re too old to referee,’” he said. “And my question to that is, ‘What am I doing wrong.’ And most of them will say nothing.
