We just finished our Community Health Assessment for Marshall County. I was leading this process and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. We were able to identify areas of need for our citizens and will now be able to put plans in place to help build a healthier Marshall County. Through this process, we were also able to partner with organizations to create a literacy program for our children on WIC, and are currently exploring ways to help aid food access in our community. Best piece of business advice: Take one bite at a time. My current boss and mentor gave me this advice when I first started. I would become stressed when looking at the big picture, but she gave me the best advice she could have ever given, and that was to take one piece at a time. She taught me how important it is to set small goals in order to complete the larger task. Stephanie Moss CASA Program Director, Child Watch Counseling and Advocacy Center Education: Master’s in Nonprofit Administration; Bachelor’s of Human Services Professional, community, and civic organizations: • Community Service Coalition Leadership Board • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workgroup Team Member for the Kentucky CASA Network • McCracken County Youth Soccer Coach Biggest challenge in your professional career: When I started in my current position as CASA Program Director, I immediately began work on expanding our program from McCracken County into Ballard County. After that successful expansion I began discussion of regionalizing into the 56th Judicial District, which includes Livingston, Lyon, Caldwell and Trigg counties. I had only been in my position at CASA for one year when the COVID-19 quarantine hit in March of 2020. Like many others we were struck with the immediate need to adapt to virtual work, and we were able to do so with our training, recruitment, and supervision of volunteers. At no point did we stop advocating for children during the quarantine, and in many ways we increased our efforts to make sure children were receiving the services they needed. We successfully expanded our advocacy services to the 56th District and are now serving six counties, nearly twice as many children with twice as many volunteers than when I began in March of 2019. I believe that I relentlessly leaned into the difficulties that COVID-19 presented and adapted at every angle in order to meet the ever-increasing needs of children in our region. 22 SEPTEMBER 2022 | PROMOTING EVENTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE Summer Barnes Physical Therapist, Baptist Health Paducah Education: Doctorate of Physical Therapy Hobbies/Hidden Talents: Spending time with my son, husband, and two dogs, traveling to new places, reading, running, and real estate investing Professional, community, and civic organizations: • Wellness Council and Shared Governance Council at Baptist Health Paducah • Heartland Church Member and Discipleship Group Leader • American Physical Therapy Association Biggest challenge in your professional career: Working in the hospital as a newish graduate through a pandemic. I sought out professional help to manage new anxieties and fears I had never experienced before, as well as lots of prayer and being surrounded by a loving community. Career achievement you are most proud of: Landing my dream job as an acute care therapist at Baptist Health Paducah. During undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to shadow other therapists at this hospital and had always hoped to return to Western Kentucky to work alongside them. Best piece of business advice: Do what you love and you’ll love what you do. I would be doing a disservice to my patients and career field if I didn’t find joy in my daily work.
