78 SEPTEMBER 2024 | INTHEVUE.COM { b y T a y l o r S h e a W e s t } SMALL BUSINESS Feature Broadway Dental Care Hunt was not only a patient of Broadway Dental Care, but also a next-door neighbor of Kinney and Kathy. “When they found out that I was interested in going to dental school, they reached out to me about working with them after graduating. They wanted me to start as an associate with the prospect of buying the practice from them eventually,” said Hunt. “It was a pretty easy decision given the fact that I wanted to move back to Paducah to raise a family and always wanted to own my own practice. The fact I was going to be able to do this with doctors with the reputation and trust from the community that the Slaughters had made it that much better.” Broadway Dental Care has always been a “family dentistry” style of practice, where they do cleanings, fillings, and crowns - the types of procedures you normally think of when going to the dentist. However, Dr. Shelton has greatly expanded their surgery services over the past five years, now placing implant services that they now provide in-house. “We are now able to take impressions for crowns, bite guards, retainers, partials, and other things digitally. This allows us to get better products back from our labs and we get them back much IT ALL STARTED WHEN DR. KINNEY and Kathy Slaughter moved back to Paducah in 1984. They started in a small building that Dr. Kinney’s father built on Trimble Street with two treatment rooms and one employee. “When they first opened their doors, the Slaughters did everything, including answering the phone and collecting money from patients. They practiced in that office until the late 90’s when they had outgrown the space and moved to 2018 Broadway, which is when they named the practice Broadway Dental Care,” said James Hunt. Eight treatment rooms allowed them to grow their practice and hire more people. In 2014, Hunt joined the practice, followed by Dr. Shelton in 2019 when Dr. Kathy retired. Hunt became an owner of the practice in 2016, then Dr. Shelton did in 2022. In 2021, they moved to their current location, which has 11 operational treatment rooms with room to put in two more. In 2023, another addition, Dr. Reed, joined their practice. “I always wanted to be a health care provider in some capacity. I had the privilege to know many people in the dental field growing up, but I would say Kinney and Kathy were the ones that I got to know best,” said Hunt.
